STRUCTURAL SURVEYS & REPORTS Structural problems occur time and again with existing buildings. They may be caused by the building's age, its type of construction, misuse or substandard alterations, effects of activities on adjacent land or basic design faults. The object of a Structural Survey and Report is to identify to parties with an interest in the building the presence and extent of structural defects, the likely consequences of them and appropriate remedial measures which may be required to provide a remedy. Because the causes of defects may often be as a result of a combination of factors its diagnosis relies on a high degree of empirical knowledge. The extent of survey required will vary depending on the requirements of individual clients, and may be limited to specific areas of the property affected by defects. The report presented will include conclusions regarding any defects noted and make recommendations either for repair or further investigations should this be appropriate. An initial survey is likely to be non-invasive, limited to a visual examination of those parts of the structure accessible without recourse to opening up or removal of finishes. Should it prove necessary a more detailed investigation may be recommended. |
